I’ve always had a thing for tall guys, so when a series came on starring Jeff Goldblum, I was already predisposed to like it. Raines is his new drama about an LA detective who has “visions” of the victims whose crimes he’s trying to solve. In my house, TV takes a backseat to books, but this one pulled me right in.
The acting and dialogue–especially Goldblum’s exchanges with the victims–are funny and sad and moving, and they move the plot ahead. Madeleine Stowe, whom I’ve loved ever since she starred in the best screen romance ever made, is wonderful as his shrink. And just like in a good romance, circumstances force them together: He has to keep his appointments with her in order to keep his job. His co-workers are worried about his mental health because of something tragic that happened to his partner. The metaphors and symbolism are powerful. Some might say heavy-handed but I think they’re done seamlessly. Example – Raines confronts a suicidal man who just shot his daughter’s killer. Where? At the mouth of the lion’s den at the zoo. It’s seamless because this was his daughter’s favorite place to go when she was alive. Also, the counsel Raines gives the man about why he must live–even though, without his child, he feels like dying–was just so powerful.
I’m usually not good with a show featuring dead people. Even talking dead people. But this one seems to be more about the living, and what they carry with them after their loved one is gone. Now that, I can handle.

I have few favorites among today’s lineups of TV Shows, but Raines is one of them. Is it coming back in the fall?
Since this is one of your faves it is obvious you have good taste.

I knew this show was doomed the first time I saw it. It was smart and interesting. I turned to my husband during the first episode and said, “they will cancel this”.
I think it was the wrong show for Goldblum, though…I think he’s better suited to comedy. And what a hunk!

“Raines” is the only show my husband and I both like , and watch together. “The Big Chill” is still one of our favorite movies. I like Grey’s Anatomy & “ER”. He likes sports (of all kinds).
PS- Thanks for the new reading list. Some are going to be re-reads, but I plan to enjoy them even more!

Jeff Goldblum always kind of creeped me out (for instance, The Fly) or I was angry at him for something he didn’t do (for instance, cast in Jurassic Park even though his character was nothing like him but not his fault).
I haven’t watched the show just because of timing. My mother enjoys it. I know the move to Friday wasn’t good for it and I don’t know how much big brass is behind it in terms of renewing it.
My mother loves this show and Medium, but she hates the dead people part. I love it when she says that because it’s like that’s what the show is about (on the outside anyway). She loves the wife/husband/family dynamic in Medium but, as she puts it, not all that dead people stuff.
At this point, it has as much of a shot of sticking around as anything else does. I’ve given up trying to predict what will make it and what will not.

PS another Jeff Goldblum movie I haven’t seen in ages but still remember: “Earth Girls Are Easy.” Example of a GREAT title.

I’m scared to like it. Seems like every time I like a show, they cancel it. Oh, I hope this one sticks! There’s something about the way Jeff Goldblum delivers a line, with this deadpan humor, that actually seems to underscore the emotions.
YAY for DVR and for the networks that let you watch entire episodes online with almost no commercials. Go “Raines” go!

We thought it was going to be another Medium, but we were pleasantly surprised. (I like Medium, I just don’t want to watch two of them.) Jeff Goldblum’s signature way of portraying sarcasm and wit make this show. He plays “crazy” very well. I love the funny boss, the slow patrol cop, and the sassy blond from Mad TV. I hope it gets renewed.

I don’t watch TV much, but I had meant to check this one out. I work in TV (which is likely why I don’t watch it) and they shot part of an episode at the lot I work on. I know this because when I was scrambling to get around the profusion of film equipment, this Very Tall Guy and I had to step around each other, and (yes) it was Jeff Goldblum. I’ve always liked him (ever since I watched _Into the Night_). So, after finding out what show was shooting here, I made a mental note to watch the show. And then I forgot. So thanks for helping me to remember. Looks like it’s on tomorrow night. Must set DVR.

That’s my new favorite show, too. I’ve discovered that if you miss an episode, you can watch it online for free at nbc.com the next day, which is handy.
